Shopify theme detector and app detector.

Enter any store's address to see whether it's built on Shopify, which theme it uses (including the original theme behind a renamed copy and its version), and which apps load on its home page, such as reviews, email, chat and payment apps. It's free, needs no browser extension, and returns the result in a few seconds.

What the detector reads from a Shopify store.

Every Shopify storefront tells the browser which theme it's running, in a small piece of code the theme uses itself. The detector reads the store's public home page once, finds that information and shows the theme name the store gave it, the original theme it was copied from, and its version. When the theme came from the Shopify Theme Store, the record includes its Theme Store number; when it doesn't, the theme is usually a custom build or comes from another marketplace.

Apps leave traces too. A reviews app loads its widget script, an email tool loads its sign-up form, a chat app loads its chat window. The detector compares the scripts on the page with a list of popular Shopify apps and tracking tools, from Klaviyo and Judge.me to Recharge, Rebuy, PageFly and the Meta Pixel, and lists the ones it finds.

Check whether a website is built on Shopify.

If the site isn't on Shopify, the detector says so and names the platform when it can recognise it, such as WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, BigCommerce, Webflow or Magento. That answers the common question of whether a competitor or supplier runs Shopify without digging through page source for cdn.shopify.com.

ResultWhat it means
Theme name and base themeThe store renamed a copy of a theme; the base is the original, such as Dawn or Prestige
Theme Store themeYou can buy or download the same theme from the Shopify Theme Store
Not a Theme Store themeLikely a custom theme or one bought elsewhere, such as ThemeForest
Theme not shownA headless storefront or a store that hides its theme details
Apps foundApps whose scripts load on the home page; apps that only work in checkout or the admin aren't visible

What no detector can see.

Detection reads what any visitor's browser receives, so it can't see the store's admin, private apps, or apps that only run on product pages, in the cart or at checkout. Some large stores block automated visits altogether; the detector tells you when that happens instead of guessing. Theme versions are what the store reports, and a heavily customised theme may look very different from the original demo.

The check is rate-limited to keep the service fair, and the page itself is never stored. Only the detected names are returned to your browser.

Liked a store's theme? Here's what to do next.

If the store uses a Theme Store theme, you can install the same base theme and get a similar layout quickly. The parts that make a store stand out, such as custom sections, product page layouts and app integrations, are usually custom work on top of the theme. That's the kind of Shopify development I do: theme customisation, custom sections, speed fixes and app integrations, with a fixed quote after a free review of what you want to build.

Shopify Theme & App Detector FAQs

How do I find out what Shopify theme a store is using?+

Enter the store's address above. The detector reads the theme name, the original theme it's based on and its version from the store's public page. You can also view the page source and search for Shopify.theme, which is where this information lives.

Can it detect which apps a Shopify store uses?+

Yes, for apps that load something on the home page, such as review widgets, email pop-ups, chat, subscriptions and tracking pixels. Apps that only work in the admin, on product pages or at checkout can't be seen from outside.

How can I tell if a website is built on Shopify?+

The detector checks for Shopify's storefront code and CDN. If the site is on another platform, it names it when it can recognise it, such as WordPress, Wix or Squarespace.

Why does it say the store blocked the check?+

Some large stores block automated visits to protect against bots. The detector doesn't try to get around that; try the address with or without www, or check another store.

Is the Shopify theme detector free?+

Yes. It's free with no sign-up and no browser extension. To keep it fair for everyone, each visitor can run up to 20 checks every 10 minutes.
